The holidays can be a difficult time of year for many people; those who are grieving or experiencing loss, survivors of childhood trauma, people who are alone and feeling lonely, workers who are not getting a much needed break, etc., etc. Let me help by giving you the five tips I find most important. And if that’s not enough, feel free to book a session and we’ll work together to get you through the holidays and start off the new year in a better place.
Adequate sleep is so important for our mental health. Some ideas to improve your sleep…blackout curtains, eye mask, ear plugs, white noise, chamomile or valerian tea before bed, short power naps, etc.
Having healthy boundaries will help support your mental health during the holidays. If something doesn’t feel right for you, it’s okay to say no. Attend functions that bring you joy and surround yourself with supportive friends.
Limit the amount of alcohol and caffeine you consume. Alcohol can bring on low thoughts and caffeine can contribute to feelings of anxiety. Focus on a diet of whole foods while still enjoying the occasional indulgence.
Stay active during the holidays. A walk in nature can help with stress. Connect with friends while walking; two ways to improve your mood!
Create a budget and stick to it. If your budget is tight, spend some time looking for creative gift ideas. This will go a long way towards reducing stress in the new year when the credit card bills arrive with holiday purchases.
