I often have clients ask for book recommendations. These are the books I most frequently suggest to my clients.
The Wise Heart by Jack Kornfield. I found this book to be life changing when I first read it almost 15 years ago. It’s inspiring and opens one up to the possibilities of a life fulfilled. I recommend this book to clients wanting more and eager to spend time between sessions uncovering their true nature.
The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook by McKay, Wood, and Brantley. I originally started recommending this book to my clients with BPD (borderline personality disorder), but as I would work through the book with them I began to recommend it to many more clients. Clients struggling with a need to regulate their emotions and manage stress as well as clients wanting to incorporate mindfulness into their lives.
Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski. Although men can learn a lot from this book, I mostly recommend it to my female clients. Even if you think you understand everything there is to know about sex, you will learn from this book. Emily explains desire in an easily understandable and non judgemental way that is useful for anyone.
Healing Trauma by Peter Levine. When talk therapy is scary, this is a great option for healing from trauma and can be used in conjunction with counseling. I work with an approach that does not require you to talk about your trauma. You’re always welcome to share your story, but the focus is often on how trauma affects you today and what we can do to work with that.
How to Break Your Addiction to a Person by Howard Halpern. This is an oldie, but it’s very eye opening regarding how our childhood and our relationship with our primary caregivers when we were a child affects our relationships as adults. Struggling with your intimate relationship? This book may be helpful.
